Priest Mayra glared as Rose finally stumbled up the steps of Temple Harmony.

“Hello, Priest Rose. You look unwell. I didn’t realize you were so delicate that the walk between temples strained you.”

Rose used all her effort to focus on not puking, so she didn’t have a witty response available. She stuck with a classic glare.

Kai bowed with perfect grace. “Greetings, Priest Mayra. My sister is unwell, but I am here to assist with whatever administrative work she was supposed to do today. She should spend some time in her room recovering so she is well for the audition tomorrow.”

Rose stared at him with wide eyes. While she hated anyone telling her what to do, the relief at not having to sit through hours of paperwork was enough to keep her mouth shut.

Priest Mayra glared at Rose, but other than accusing her of impropriety, she couldn’t refuse the offer. “I welcome your assistance, Priest Kai. I will see you inside.” She bowed stiffly before leaving.

“Why are you being so nice to me?” Rose looked at Kai with suspicious eyes.

“I know this might be hard to believe, but some of us know how to be a nice person.”

She glared and started to hit him but reconsidered.

His eyes lit up. “There’s hope for you yet!”

She did smack him then.

He laughed, then looked at her with serious eyes. “I only ask one thing in return for this. Please consider apologizing. Not to me. To Wilder.”

She ground her teeth and didn’t respond.

“I’m serious, Rosie. He didn’t deserve the way you treated him. And despite the way Caed described him, I think he’s a good guy. He’s one of the few people I’ve met that’s strong enough to stand toe to toe with you.” He gave her a small smile. “I think he’s a good match for you.”

She groaned. “Kai! I’m not looking for a match right now! I just want to make it through the auditions, get my Gift back, and start my life over. A relationship isn’t on my mind at all!”

He smirked. “Of course it isn’t.”

She smacked him one last time before heading to her room.
